How does an 123 year old library stay relevant in a modern age? Let’s just say that the New York Public Library is quite literally putting ‘stories’ back into Instagram Stories. A couple of weeks ago, they launched a project called “Insta-Novels” in which classic novels were digitalized and uploaded to @nypl’s Instagram story.
The idea infatuated me, and I found myself thinking “why didn’t anybody think of this earlier?!” Now, these aren’t just any old digital books – They are sprinkled with some gorgeous illustrations and a few fun animations. They have even gone to the detail of leaving a space for users to hold their thumb while reading without obstructing their view. Amongst the jungle of sponsored influencer posts and celebrity boomerangs, it was refreshing to see something so experimental.
The brains behind this masterpiece comes from Corinna Falusi and her team at Mother, a New York-based creative agency. “Instagram unknowingly created the perfect bookshelf for this new kind of online novel, from the way you turn the pages, to where you rest your thumb while reading, the experience is already unmistakably like reading a paperback novel.”
How can Hustle help?
You’re never too old to grow on social.
The New York Public Library was established in 1895 – Bottom is… she’s old! Yet in 2018, they are still finding a way to stay relevant by using social media. Whether your business is beginning to grow or is already well-known, social will ALWAYS be beneficial. When you start seeing social as a way to authentically connect instead of a sales pitch, the power will fall at your fingertips. An active social media presence will allow you to build a stronger relationship with your audience, and create new ones with people who might not necessarily be familiar with who you are and what you do/sell.
It goes without saying – innovation is the only way to survive. Thinking outside the box and creating unusual content will allow your brand to stand out amongst the competitors. Sparking the audience’s interest will make you much more memorable, and will likely help you win a follower’s loyalty.
Believe in a higher social purpose.
Nowadays, authenticity and transparency is a standard expectation from audiences. Yet brands are hesitant to showcase their beliefs in absolute fear of negative backlash. Having fewer customers that truly believe in your brand and its values will prove far more beneficial than putting on a facade to hold onto a few extra customers. Richert Schnorr, the director of digital media at the NYPL promoted education, particularly of the youth of America, as the sole motivator of this campaign. “We hope bringing books to social media, surprising them with classics as they scroll through their feed, will spark an interest in reading that leads them to visit their local libraries, download our e-books, and keep turning pages.”
