People right across the world have ideas every single second of the day. Simple yet well thought out ideas such as how taking a new shortcut will get you home faster, how to win your tennis match, get your kids to eat dinner, through to more challenging ideas around new drugs, treatments, or technologies.
We all have them, just some are very different to others.
What is an idea?
An idea is described in the Oxford dictionary as “a thought or suggestion as to a possible course of action”
So ideas are thoughts or collections of thoughts that generate in the mind, usually generated with intent ( to solve a problem), but can also be created unintentionally. Simply put people come up with ideas for a variety of reasons but mostly out of a necessity to improve, change, make life easier, or perhaps to simply make themselves and others happy.
Great ideas & great people:
If we think about the people that have changed the history of the world names such as Steve Jobs (technology), Martin Luther King (civil rights), William Shakespeare (literature), Mother Teresa (religion), Leonardo Da Vinci (arts) and many more come to mind.
These people all had one thing in common, they had a dream for change, a passion to find a way to make the world a more efficient, beautiful, and just place, and it all began with their ideas. Another thing they all had in common was, they put their ideas into action, came up with a plan, a strategy and then went out determined with an obsession and drive to make their ideas come to life.
As a good friend of mine told me many years ago, “son an idea is worth nothing unless you bring it life, put it into action”.
Ideas and technology:
A penny for your thoughts..or maybe a billion dollars?
We hear of lot’s of people, ordinary people that have put their ideas into action, in particular in the technology sector where their ideas with the use of technology have made them Billions of dollars due to reaching a global audience and in very scalable ways.
The smartphone has enabled us to instal software or apps to a person’s device and then reach them via push notification technology at will, keeping them engaged or as we like to say “being in the palm of your customers hands”.
Other people have been doing really well online in business for almost 20 years now using the internet to reach a global audience, and if you are a regular reader of this blog will know from past posts the Billions of dollars that some companies turnover using eCommerce to sell their goods and services.
Yes the App stores and internet put everybody on a level playing field and suddenly ordinary people could dare to dream up ideas and with a relatively small level of investment, turn their ideas into reality and into a new business never before possible.
I believe that in 100 years from now, future generations will see this time as a turning point in humanity, in how we all became connected across the planet, and how new ways of doing business began. Who’s wants to get onboard?
Do you have an Idea?
Everyday people call to tell me about their app idea, business idea, or new way to improve their systems, existing business, and much more. While their ideas range, they do all ask me the same two questions, can my idea be done it could work? And how much will it cost to design and develop my app idea?
What you need to do if you have an App idea:
- Call up and speak to an expert app maker – developer to validate if your idea truly has legs or not. This is not just about the technologies needed from creating the app, but also about if it will truly solve a problem or offer a great solution or way of doing things.
- Protect your self by signing a non disclosure agreement before you dive down into too much detail. While it’s only an idea, it could be very valuable..
- Tease out your app idea by doing a workshop discovery session. It is here that the detail will be mapped out and where the plan begins to take shape around what is needed to bring your idea to life, including how long it will take, and most importantly how much it will cost you.
Remember, an idea is only worth something if it is put into an action. Unfortunately many people have great ideas but lack to foresight and sometimes the courage to actually do something about them.
My advice: if you have an idea that you truly believe in, that keeps awake at night and whereat your inner voice tells you to pursue, then you need to at the very least do some investigation and homework seeking professional help and advice.
You need help where an expert will formulate a plan, a blueprint that shows the actions that you need to take in order to bring your big idea to life.
This small investment in time and money will be the best thing you ever do.
Only then can you let your idea go, or begin planning how you will turn your dream idea into the next big hit.
